Questions

Drone Aerial Mapping in Oklahoma: FAQ

What will a drone map of my fields show?
What you can't see from the truck: stand gaps, weed patches, ponding and drainage problems, nutrient stress and disease, in high-resolution color (RGB) and plant-health (NDVI) maps. You act on exactly the acres that need it: a replant call, a tile repair, a spot-spray instead of a whole-field pass.
Can a drone map lower my spray bill?
Often. A weed map can drive a spot-spray or variable-rate prescription, so herbicide goes only where the weeds are. In an Iowa State demonstration, drone weed-mapping plus spot-spraying cut herbicide use nearly 50%, about $13 an acre, with no yield loss. The patchier the problem, the bigger the savings.
How much does drone mapping cost in Oklahoma?
Usually about $5–$9 an acre per flight. A 2023 University of Arizona Extension guide found most drone companies charge $6–$9 an acre for a plant-health (NDVI) map, or $600–$1,800 to fly a 100- to 200-acre field once; a plain color (RGB) map runs closer to $5 an acre. Ask each operator for a per-acre price and a sample of the deliverable, then compare quotes from the 4 Oklahoma mapping operators listed here.
When should I fly a mapping flight?
When the answer will change a decision. Early season is for stand counts and replant calls. Mid-season catches weed escapes, nutrient stress and disease while there's still time to treat. Late season helps you plan drainage, seed and fertility for next year. A few flights a season usually tell you more than one.
Does a mapping operator need a license?
A commercial mapping flight needs an FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate. Mapping doesn't apply anything, so it doesn't need the Part 137 agricultural certificate a spraying or seeding job does. Many operators here do both: they map the field, then fly the treatment.
